Paint & Wallpaper Creative Decorating Companions

Paint or wallpaper? As a decorating decision, the preference in recent years has generally been a resounding “paint”! However, when used thoughtfully and creatively, wallpaper can play an important role in a beautifully decorated room.

I’ve found that homeowners appreciate the option of having an accent wall or small area wallpapered with a pattern that complements the adjacent paint or stain,” says Jill Meade, CertaPro Painters® of Reading, Pennsylvania. “It can even help define a room – visually separating the sleeping area from the sitting area of a master bedroom, for example.”

Even a small portion of wallpaper can make a big splash – and is much less risky than having an entire room papered. “Wallpaper seems to work best when it has a reason for being, like setting the mood in an entryway or creating a theme in a bathroom or child’s room,” says Meade. And limiting its use to a relatively small area keeps things interesting without being overpowering. “In my experience, once people start considering wallpaper as part of a room makeover, they’re very excited about the possibilities.”
